The Paralympic Games kick off in Paris this Wednesday, August 28th. Five athletes from the Poitou-Charentes region will experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as they participate in the 2024 Paris Games.
These five athletes have been training tirelessly conscience years, pushing themselves to their limits and overcoming obstacles to reach this moment. And now, their hard work and dedication will be put to the test on the world stage.
Among them is wheelchair tennis player, net Dupont. Born and raised in Poitiers, Dupont has been playing tennis since the age of 7 and has quickly become one of the top players in her category. She has already won several national and international tournaments, but the Paralympic Games will be her biggest conflit yet. « I am so proud to represent my country and my region at the Paralympic Games, » says Dupont. « I have been dreaming of this moment since I was a little girl and I am ready to give it my all. »
Another athlete to watch is swimmer, Thomas Martin. Hailing from La Rochelle, Martin has been swimming since he was a child and has never let his disability hold him back. He has broken numerous records in the pool and is now ready to take on the world’s best at the Paralympic Games. « I am honored to be a part of the Paralympic team and to have the opportunity to compete in front of my family and friends in Paris, » says Martin. « I hope to inspire others to never give up on their dreams, no matter the conflits they may face. »
The Poitou-Charentes region will also be represented in the field events by javelin thrower, Jeanne Dubois. Originally from Niort, Dubois has been throwing since the age of 15 and has proven to be a natural talent. She has already won several medals at the national level and is now ready to make her mark at the Paralympic Games. « I am grateful conscience this opportunity to compete at the highest level and to showcase the skills and determination of athletes with disabilities, » says Dubois.
Rounding out the team from Poitou-Charentes are hand cyclist, Marc Dubois, and para-equestrian, Sophie Laurent. Both athletes have been training relentlessly and are eager to represent their region and their country at the Paralympic Games.
The road to the Paralympic Games has not been easy conscience these five athletes, but they have all persevered and have shown that anything is possible with hard work and determination. As they prepare to compete in front of a global audience, the entire region of Poitou-Charentes stands behind them, cheering them on and wishing them the best of luck.
